Tom Nicoli, internationally published author, speaker, trainer, personal development coach and consultant. Tom holds certifications in a variety of modalities for Personal Development and Behavioral Change, and has been involved in the study of personal development for over 23 years. The Story Of My Life

The rise, the fall, the transformation and contribution.

In the beginning…

Born in Boston, MA USA – 9/23/1959
Neither parent graduated High School
Mom - housewife, married at 17 (dad was 24) and dad was hard working blue collar. I was first born – oldest of 4.
I was always the nice, polite kid and smart in school.
Manners and doing well in school were the foundation of my parent’s rules. I grew up in what is known as “old school.”
We moved eleven times before I moved out on my own. A better apartment, better rent... whatever the reason.
At 10 years old I got an acoustic guitar for Christmas.
Never asked for it but I took to it like a fish in water. I haven’t stopped playing it and I’m now 60. I still have that guitar… and many more now. ; ) AT 23 I was in an original rock band, Armed Forces, and did an album on American Records. It was my first real life goal since I was a kid.

Growing up…

At 19 I got a delivery driving job at a Dental Lab
and eventually started learning crown & bridge dental technology and became an Implant Specialist. This stayed with me until I became a Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Personal Development Coach.
In 1986 I left the music industry
and met the woman I eventually married. We lived together for almost 4 years. In September, 1990 we got married.
A year later
we had our son Jesse… born on my birthday, September 23.

Early career…

During these years I was working
in a dental lab about 50-60 hours a week and playing out as a musician 2-4 nights per week.
Fast forward to 1999. I still worked endless hours
I know, and have always known, there’s a way to break free from limitation and just haven’t found it yet, and looking for stage hypnosis training I found a local instructor that introduced me to Hypnotherapy. The light bulb went off and I’ve never looked back.
Now I had another time suck…
building my career. So, starting when I got certified, March 1, 1999, I worked 7 days per week, sleeping an average of 5 hours a night, and did that for over 1 year. Eventually it leveled off a bit, but I still persevered working the dental lab, my practice and gigs at night.
Fast forward to January 2003.
As I was driving home from my office, which was 8 feet x 8 feet… a storage closet that I rented and turned into my Hypnotherapy Office, A Better You Hypnosis, Inc., I listened to a voicemail from an Associate Producer at Dateline NBC. I called her the next day and she informed me Dateline NBC was going to do a 3-episode project taking place over 10 months, Called the Ultimate Diet Challenge. It was more than I ever imagined, and it was BIG!!!

Fame.

The Dateline NBC 1-hour show has 3 stories in it.
The Ultimate Diet Challenge was one of those stories. At the time I had a cassette tape for Weight Loss. Side A and B. Sold it for $19.99. By the time the show ended my website was getting TONS of traffic. That week we sold $10,000 of that cassette tape. Finally… what I always believed was coming true! I was going From Stress to Success!!!
Now, there’s an avalanche of new clients.
And I’m still at the 8 feet by 8 feet office. Booking everyone with a flip phone, no automated anything online. The Big Dig was going on in Boston, so I was having night shift guys coming in at 7 AM. I did sessions on the hour until 10 PM… 7 days a week.
Second episode aired in July.
By the end of the hour we sold $10,000 of the cassette and $50,000 that week. Still, it was a bit surreal.
Finally, I’m earning some real money.
I left the storage closet office, got a professional office in a city nearby and kept rolling. I added an office manager and two hypnotists on staff.
At this point I am the flavor of the month in my profession.
My notoriety went through the roof. I got more and more interviews on radio, magazines and newspapers. Did a few more TV shows locally… the news loved covering me and my story, and the work I was doing.
Seminars begin.
1- and 2-day seminars for people in the profession across the USA, England, Denmark and Canada, too.
During this time, we left the 5-room apartment and
moved into an 11-room house with 3 acres of land and an in-ground pool in Windham, NH. I was now living in the type of neighborhood that was once just a dream. Jesse, our son, was now in the 8th grade.
Things continued like this until 2010
I turned 50, we had a mutual divorce and then…

The Fall.

January 2012 my life changed, not in a good way.
At home I tripped and fell face first, on to a ceramic tile floor, while holding a wine glass in my left hand. The glass shattered and gave me 6 stitches in my left thumb. But, as I fell, my face landed straight on the stem, still in my hand. It went up through my left eye and almost into my brain.

Only centimetres from doing tremendous damage. I jumped up and put a towel over my face and said to the guy with me, “Let’s go. I’ll tell you where to drive. We’ll get it stitched up and come back.” He said, “I don’t think so.”

I had no idea how bad it was.
Hours later I felt the winter cold
as I’m being wheeled out into an ambulance to take me from NH to Boston – Mass Eye & Ear – Mass General Hospital. Hours of tests, MRI, etc. and they finally operate. When the doctor told me I wouldn’t see out of that eye, but I could drive and people fly planes, I said, “That’s’ great.” When he asked why, I said, “Because I don’t know how to fly a plane right now.” His reply… “You’ll be alright.”

The Master Visionary attitude was already in play.
I never complained.
People were calling from around the world, while I was in the hospital, and my son and I still have no idea how people found out.

Turning Tragedy Into a Blessing

That was the start of years of challenges
Oh… when this happened I was 5 weeks without medical insurance… and that created over $100,000 in medical bills. Add that to losing all IRA $$ and other accounts in the divorce, just a few years earlier.

And now I couldn’t work at all.

When I did work, it was Tuesday and Thursday, 3 hours each day.

My credit plummeted and the only thing I saved was my house.

I struggled to get back to any type of normalcy, all the while believing it will all turn out fine.
Fast forward to July of 2015…
Paralyzed left side of face and left arm… Bell’s Palsy.

I was totally F’ed. This was worse to deal with than the eye accident. The tests showed, and I quote, “All things are leading to Lyme Disease as the trigger.”

Thankfully, 2 weeks prior, I went to Emergency care for what I thought was a spider bite. It’s clear to me that was the tick bite, which means I didn’t have Lyme running through my body and ruining me completely.

But I did have excruciating physical pain throughout my entire back.

Sleep was about 15 minutes at a time, wherever I was sitting.

I couldn’t talk, eat properly, drink, etc.
I decided, in order to give myself the best healing opportunity,
I was to get really clean. In my eating, mindset, etc.

I was already working with a Master Herbalist. He told me some things to do and use.

BTW, the eye accident and Bell’s Palsy… I took no prescription medication other than a little pain relief during the Bell’s Palsy onset.
I did my best to make it through each day.
Very, very slowly I started getting some relief. Function started improving and eventually I got back to about 80%.

I still have lingering paralysis on the left side of my face, eyelid, mouth, neck, etc. and have had Tinnitus in my left ear since it happened, 24/7.

However, I expect to fully heal.
By the following year I was able to
get back in the swing of things, but changed my business and the work I was doing, which has all led to Master Visionary Coaching.
